Lake District Intermediate Map Reading Course

Course: £60.00

Intermediate Map Reading & Navigation Courses Lake District

This course helps you take the next step in your navigation skills. You’ll learn how to plan and follow more complex routes with confidence, and how to stay in control even when the terrain or visibility is challenging.

It does not matter if you have never used a compass before but you should have a good knowledge of map symbols and know how to plan and follow a simple route.

We run these courses in the southern Lake District, starting near Coniston.

There will be a maximum of four participants on the course which means you can be sure of plenty of personal tuition.

What You’ll Learn on the Intermediate Navigation Course

  • Building a navigation plan:
How to create a clear strategy for each stage of your walk, using both coarse navigation (big, easy-to-spot features) and fine navigation (precise, detailed map reading).

  • Using ‘tick features’:
How to spot key features along your route—such as walls, streams, bends, or junctions—to confirm you’re on the right path.

  • Compass skills:
How to take an accurate compass bearing and follow it, even when paths aren’t obvious.

  • Reading the land:
A deeper understanding of contour features so you can picture the shape of the ground and use it to guide your route.

  • Accurate distance judging:
How to measure distance on the map and match it to the real world using pacing and simple timing techniques.

  • Route planning with safety in mind:
How to plan a walk by considering weather forecasts, ground conditions, and current access laws.

  • Finding your position:
Easy, reliable techniques for relocating when you’re unsure exactly where you are.

  • Checking directions with a compass:
How to confirm the direction of paths, boundaries, or other line features.

  • Grid references:
How to give or find a precise 6-figure grid reference on the map.

  • Emergency skills:
What to do in a serious situation and how to contact Mountain Rescue.

Striding Edge or Sharp Edge – which makes the bett Striding Edge or Sharp Edge – which makes the better first scramble? 🤔⛰️

It's one of the questions we're asked most often...

"Should I start with Striding Edge or Sharp Edge?"

The honest answer? Neither is automatically the best choice for everyone.

Both are fantastic Grade 1 scrambles in the Lake District, but they offer very different experiences.

🏔️ Striding Edge is broader, busier and has plenty of opportunities to choose easier or harder lines. It's a brilliant introduction for many people, but the exposure can feel intimidating if you're nervous about heights.

🪨 Sharp Edge is shorter but more technical. It demands good footwork and confidence on steeper rock. In dry conditions it's an exciting challenge, but when it's wet it can become surprisingly serious.

The best first scramble isn't necessarily the most famous one—it's the one that matches your experience, confidence and the conditions on the day.

That's why, on our scrambling days, we don't just guide you across a ridge. We help you develop the skills and confidence to move efficiently on rocky ground, make good decisions and enjoy the experience rather than simply getting through it.

Because the goal isn't to tick off one scramble...

It's to build the confidence to enjoy many more adventures in the mountains. 💚

Have you done Striding Edge, Sharp Edge, both, or neither? Which would you recommend as a first scramble? Let us know in the comments! 👇

📍 Why We Keep Our Group Sizes Small One of the qu 📍 Why We Keep Our Group Sizes Small

One of the questions we’re often asked is why we run our Beginners Navigation Courses with low instructor-to-participant ratios.

The answer is simple: learning navigation takes practice.

Reading a map, taking bearings, interpreting terrain and making good route choices are all skills that develop through doing—not just watching. By keeping groups small, every participant gets plenty of opportunities to make decisions, ask questions, make mistakes, and then try again in a supportive environment.

Rather than rushing from point to point, we can slow things down, explore different techniques, and give individual feedback tailored to each learner’s needs. This helps build confidence and ensures that everyone leaves with skills they can use independently on future adventures.

Navigation isn't about following an instructor around the hills—it's about learning how to find your own way.

Small groups. More practice. Better learning. 🧭

Privileged to be asked to observe a trainee mounta Privileged to be asked to observe a trainee mountaineering and climbing instructor preparing for their assessment. It has been shown that asking for critical feedback can greatly enhance the prospect of a positive outcome and help to improve all round. I learnt a lot too today, some great questioning and coaching and an all round positive day for the climbers who came to assist.
