Thank you for all your help teaching our USMC club members Nick! They learnt lots and had fun, despite the rain!

We had a fantastic day with Nick on the Beginners Navigation course. We both learnt a lot/refreshed existing knowledge. Nick was a clear and patient teacher. The route was lovely with great views and lots of nice map detail to navigate by. We were very lucky to have stunning weather too. Looking forward to putting our knowledge into practice - and hopefully coming back for an intermediate course one day.

Fab beginners navigation course. I learned so much about OS maps and some great tips for map reading. Nick was so kind and patient and the route was spectacular. He even planned good weather! Thoroughly recommend!
Allen Turner
I had a great day out with Nick, he was knowledgeable about the area and was able to pick and suggest climbs at my level.
As someone looking to get back into climbing, Nick was able to suggest a couple of climbs to get me back into the swing climbing. by the end of the day we had climbed a number of multi pitch climbs, I had done some leading and we finished on a climb with some challenge too. It was a great way to get back into climbing and exactly what I wanted.
Thanks Nick.

Very enjoyable and informative day around Calebreck. My Dad and I booked onto the intermediate navigation course after having a quick chat to Nick about what course would best suit our needs. We did a short overview of the basics before jumping into the more in depth stuff. Nick was very knowledgeable, he explained the stratrgies well, had a lot of tips and also just great to chat to about his experiences volunteering for Keswick Mountain Rescuse as well as his other mountaineering ventures. Would highly recommend.

Information and communication prior to the course was excellent. Small group enabled 1:1 support where needed. Facilitator Nick was very patient, covered relevant content with clear explanations and examples. We had lots of opportunities to ask questions, try out new skills, make mistakes and learn from them and notice anomalies between maps and the real world ( e.g. recent boundary changes). Able to take in absolutely stunning surroundings in good company and glorious weather. I
would recommend this course without reservation.

We had a really great session with Nick. We did the BMC intro to trad and got a lot out of it. Nick was extremely patient and calm with a clear wealth of knowledge from years of experience. He answered all our questions and went above and beyond what was laid out in the description of the course. I would highly recommend More than Mountains.

Striding Edge or Sharp Edge – which makes the bett Striding Edge or Sharp Edge – which makes the better first scramble? 🤔⛰️

It's one of the questions we're asked most often...

"Should I start with Striding Edge or Sharp Edge?"

The honest answer? Neither is automatically the best choice for everyone.

Both are fantastic Grade 1 scrambles in the Lake District, but they offer very different experiences.

🏔️ Striding Edge is broader, busier and has plenty of opportunities to choose easier or harder lines. It's a brilliant introduction for many people, but the exposure can feel intimidating if you're nervous about heights.

🪨 Sharp Edge is shorter but more technical. It demands good footwork and confidence on steeper rock. In dry conditions it's an exciting challenge, but when it's wet it can become surprisingly serious.

The best first scramble isn't necessarily the most famous one—it's the one that matches your experience, confidence and the conditions on the day.

That's why, on our scrambling days, we don't just guide you across a ridge. We help you develop the skills and confidence to move efficiently on rocky ground, make good decisions and enjoy the experience rather than simply getting through it.

Because the goal isn't to tick off one scramble...

It's to build the confidence to enjoy many more adventures in the mountains. 💚

Have you done Striding Edge, Sharp Edge, both, or neither? Which would you recommend as a first scramble? Let us know in the comments! 👇

Whichever option you choose, our goal is the same: to give you the skills and confidence to make your own decisions in the mountains and enjoy your adventures safely.

So... which sounds more like you?

📍 Why We Keep Our Group Sizes Small One of the qu 📍 Why We Keep Our Group Sizes Small

One of the questions we’re often asked is why we run our Beginners Navigation Courses with low instructor-to-participant ratios.

The answer is simple: learning navigation takes practice.

Reading a map, taking bearings, interpreting terrain and making good route choices are all skills that develop through doing—not just watching. By keeping groups small, every participant gets plenty of opportunities to make decisions, ask questions, make mistakes, and then try again in a supportive environment.

Rather than rushing from point to point, we can slow things down, explore different techniques, and give individual feedback tailored to each learner’s needs. This helps build confidence and ensures that everyone leaves with skills they can use independently on future adventures.

Navigation isn't about following an instructor around the hills—it's about learning how to find your own way.

Small groups. More practice. Better learning. 🧭

Privileged to be asked to observe a trainee mounta Privileged to be asked to observe a trainee mountaineering and climbing instructor preparing for their assessment. It has been shown that asking for critical feedback can greatly enhance the prospect of a positive outcome and help to improve all round. I learnt a lot too today, some great questioning and coaching and an all round positive day for the climbers who came to assist.
