Lake District Bespoke Map Reading Course

Bespoke Map Reading & Navigation Course Lake District

We can tailor our navigation courses to suit anyone and are happy to run courses lasting one to five days. Let us know what you have done before and what you want to achieve and we will design a course just for you. If there is a particular skill you would like to learn or somewhere in the Lake District you have always wanted to navigate to then let us know and we will make sure it is part of your course.

Our navigation courses are designed to give you the skills and confidence to get out and explore the hills alone or with friends and family without a guide. We offer navigation courses at Beginner, Intermediate or Advanced Level or your own bespoke map reading course designed just for you. All of our navigation courses are based in the beautiful surroundings of the Lake District and we always try to make sure you have a wonderful day out in the hills as well as learning how to read a map and use a compass.

We believe that good navigation always starts with good map work so this is what we start with and put a strong focus on throughout our courses. Ordnance Survey maps are probably the best maps in the world so it makes sense to be able to make use of all of the detail that is on them. The weather in the UK is very variable so if you want to be able to get out walking in the Lake District fells you need to know what to do when visibility is poor.

Learning how to navigate will dramatically improve all of your future experiences in the countryside whether you enjoy going on gentle walks through woodland or strenuous hikes to Britain’s highest mountains.

Striding Edge or Sharp Edge – which makes the bett Striding Edge or Sharp Edge – which makes the better first scramble? 🤔⛰️

It's one of the questions we're asked most often...

"Should I start with Striding Edge or Sharp Edge?"

The honest answer? Neither is automatically the best choice for everyone.

Both are fantastic Grade 1 scrambles in the Lake District, but they offer very different experiences.

🏔️ Striding Edge is broader, busier and has plenty of opportunities to choose easier or harder lines. It's a brilliant introduction for many people, but the exposure can feel intimidating if you're nervous about heights.

🪨 Sharp Edge is shorter but more technical. It demands good footwork and confidence on steeper rock. In dry conditions it's an exciting challenge, but when it's wet it can become surprisingly serious.

The best first scramble isn't necessarily the most famous one—it's the one that matches your experience, confidence and the conditions on the day.

That's why, on our scrambling days, we don't just guide you across a ridge. We help you develop the skills and confidence to move efficiently on rocky ground, make good decisions and enjoy the experience rather than simply getting through it.

Because the goal isn't to tick off one scramble...

It's to build the confidence to enjoy many more adventures in the mountains. 💚

Have you done Striding Edge, Sharp Edge, both, or neither? Which would you recommend as a first scramble? Let us know in the comments! 👇

📍 Why We Keep Our Group Sizes Small One of the qu 📍 Why We Keep Our Group Sizes Small

One of the questions we’re often asked is why we run our Beginners Navigation Courses with low instructor-to-participant ratios.

The answer is simple: learning navigation takes practice.

Reading a map, taking bearings, interpreting terrain and making good route choices are all skills that develop through doing—not just watching. By keeping groups small, every participant gets plenty of opportunities to make decisions, ask questions, make mistakes, and then try again in a supportive environment.

Rather than rushing from point to point, we can slow things down, explore different techniques, and give individual feedback tailored to each learner’s needs. This helps build confidence and ensures that everyone leaves with skills they can use independently on future adventures.

Navigation isn't about following an instructor around the hills—it's about learning how to find your own way.

Small groups. More practice. Better learning. 🧭

Privileged to be asked to observe a trainee mounta Privileged to be asked to observe a trainee mountaineering and climbing instructor preparing for their assessment. It has been shown that asking for critical feedback can greatly enhance the prospect of a positive outcome and help to improve all round. I learnt a lot too today, some great questioning and coaching and an all round positive day for the climbers who came to assist.
