Advanced Map Reading & Navigation Course in the Lake District

This is an advanced navigation course for hill walkers with some experience of navigating away from paths and tracks.

It is the next step on from our Intermediate Navigation Course and we will be teaching to the same standard as a Mountain Leader training or Gold NNAS. The course consists of micro-navigation away from paths and tracks.

The day will start at 11am and finish at 7pm to give us the opportunity to navigate in the dark.

You will need some experience of navigating away from paths and tracks to attend this course and be fit enough for a long day on rough ground. If you are not sure whether this is the right course for you please contact us and we will be happy to advise.

We will teach you:

  • Advanced navigation skills to Mountain Leader Award or Gold NNAS level.
  • Refinement of the following skills to improve accuracy and to be able to use them in more complicated terrain:
  • Pacing
  • Timing
  • Compass bearings
  • Use of contour features (such as knolls, valleys, spurs and re-entrants) to navigate
  • Navigation in poor visibility including night navigation
