Cairngorms Winter Mountaineering Course

£290.00

Winter Mountaineering Course in the Cairngorms

We run our winter mountaineering courses in both the Lake District and Scotland, offering tailored instruction to suit your experience, goals, and preferred dates. Each of our winter skills courses is designed specifically for you and your group, so whether you’re preparing for your first winter walking adventure or aiming to lead your first winter climb, we’ll create a course that meets your needs and helps you build confidence in the mountains.

Our instructors can run winter walking, winter mountaineering, or winter climbing skills courses on dates that fit your schedule. If there’s a route you’ve always wanted to climb or a particular skill you’d like to learn, we’ll design a bespoke course just for you. We can guide you on a classic winter journey or teach you the essential techniques to travel safely and independently in challenging winter conditions. Courses are available for all ability levels — from complete beginners to experienced summer climbers looking to develop new winter mountain skills.

We highly recommend the Cairngorms National Park for our Scottish winter mountaineering and climbing courses. The routes here are easily accessible from the ski area car park, with Coire an’t Sneachda providing excellent introductory gullies and the Fiacaill Ridge offering ideal terrain for mountaineering and scrambling practice. Our courses cover essential topics such as avalanche awareness, winter navigation, and decision-making in poor visibility. We can also meet in Glen Coe or Fort William for a guided ascent of Ben Nevis.

In the Lake District, classic winter routes such as Striding Edge and Swirral Edge on Helvellyn, and the gullies on Great End, provide superb venues for winter climbing and mountaineering training. All our courses are run by fully qualified Winter Mountaineering and Climbing Instructors (WMCI) who are full members of the Association of Mountaineering Instructors (AMI).

Course information

The number of people each instructor can take will depend on the type of course you would like to do.

The ratios below are general rules to give you an idea but this may vary depending on your exact requirements.

  • Winter Walking (including learning how to use ice axe and crampons): 1 instructor to 6 clients
  • Winter Mountaineering (like scrambling but in winter conditions): 1 instructor to 3 or 4 clients depending on the route.
  • Winter Climbing: 1 instructor to 2 clients

So, for example, if six of you would like to do a winter walking course then it will cost you less than £49 each for a full day.

⛰️ The OMM – a weekend of type 2 fun! 🏃‍♂️🗺️🏕️ Co ⛰️ The OMM – a weekend of type 2 fun! 🏃‍♂️🗺️🏕️

Completing the OMM this weekend felt like a culmination of many years spent hiking, running, navigating and camping in the mountains.

It’s an event that brings all those skills together. Getting your kit right, managing yourself in challenging conditions, making good navigation decisions and finding those elusive control markers hidden amongst tiny lochans, where everything can look remarkably similar! 🗺️

It’s also a reminder that mountain skills go far beyond simply being able to move quickly. Preparation, adaptability, judgement and knowing when to trust your experience are all part of the challenge.

A big part of this weekend was respecting the decisions made by the organisers, who assessed the conditions and allowed the event to go ahead. Events like this depend on careful judgement, and that deserves recognition.

And, of course, there’s the type 2 fun. The kind that might not always feel like fun at the time, but leaves you smiling afterwards, with a few stories to tell and a healthy appreciation of a warm, dry change of clothes!

Best of all was sharing the experience with so many like-minded people who enjoy the challenge of being out in the mountains, whatever the weather throws at them.

Tired legs, a head full of memories and another reminder of why I love spending time in the mountains. ❤️

Some routes become more than just a line on a map. Some routes become more than just a line on a map.

The North West Face of Idwal Slabs is one of those routes for me.

I first climbed it during my MCI training. I then returned for my assessment — two occasions when I was developing the skills and judgement needed to become a Mountaineering Instructor.

Since then, I've climbed it many more times, including teaching trainee MCIs and working with mountain rescue team members on safe personal mountaineering skills, managing movement on steep ground, and, importantly, how to look after other people when things don't go to plan — including dealing with casualties on the route.

Every visit has added another layer to what this place means to me.

There's something particularly satisfying about returning to the same terrain years later and realising just how much has changed — not the mountain, but your experience, knowledge, judgement and responsibility.

In many ways, Idwal Slabs represents my journey as a mountaineering instructor.

My first experiences of the mountains were with the Scouts in the Ogwen Valley. Years later, I was back in the same valley learning the skills and techniques required to become an MCI. Now I have the privilege of bringing other instructors and mountain rescue team members here to develop their own skills.

From learning in these mountains to helping others learn in them.

That's quite a journey — and one I'm very grateful for.

August has been a busy month. Lots of scrambling, August has been a busy month. Lots of scrambling, climbing and navigation in the fells.
Striding Edge or Sharp Edge – which makes the bett Striding Edge or Sharp Edge – which makes the better first scramble? 🤔⛰️

It's one of the questions we're asked most often...

"Should I start with Striding Edge or Sharp Edge?"

The honest answer? Neither is automatically the best choice for everyone.

Both are fantastic Grade 1 scrambles in the Lake District, but they offer very different experiences.

🏔️ Striding Edge is broader, busier and has plenty of opportunities to choose easier or harder lines. It's a brilliant introduction for many people, but the exposure can feel intimidating if you're nervous about heights.

🪨 Sharp Edge is shorter but more technical. It demands good footwork and confidence on steeper rock. In dry conditions it's an exciting challenge, but when it's wet it can become surprisingly serious.

The best first scramble isn't necessarily the most famous one—it's the one that matches your experience, confidence and the conditions on the day.

That's why, on our scrambling days, we don't just guide you across a ridge. We help you develop the skills and confidence to move efficiently on rocky ground, make good decisions and enjoy the experience rather than simply getting through it.

Because the goal isn't to tick off one scramble...

It's to build the confidence to enjoy many more adventures in the mountains. 💚

Have you done Striding Edge, Sharp Edge, both, or neither? Which would you recommend as a first scramble? Let us know in the comments! 👇
