Lake District Scrambling Course for Beginners

Course: £60.00

Beginners Scrambling Course Lake District UK

This one day course, in the Lake District, is ideal if you are a hill walker or an inexperienced scrambler and want to increase your skills and confidence to take on more adventurous routes.

By the end of the day you will have considerably increased your knowledge of scrambling and will have completed some classic Lake District scrambles. With such small group sizes we try to tailor every course to its participants so if there is an aspect of scrambling you would particularly like to learn about or a route you’ve always wanted to try please just let us know. This course is particularly suitable for runners looking to gain further experience for sky running events such as the Pinnacle Ridge extreme race here in the Lake District. It would also make a great training day as preparation for an Alpine trip to climb peaks such as the Matterhorn.

The course is based in Langdale, one of the most scenic parts of the Lake District and only fifteen minutes by car or bus from Ambleside. Precise details of the meeting time and place will be emailed to you when you book.

On the Introduction to Scrambling course we will look at how to use a guidebook and how to navigate to the start of a route. Once on the scramble we will look at route choice, equipment selection, movement skills and how to gain the confidence to feel comfortable on steep and exposed ground.

This will all help to give you an understanding of scrambling grades and routes and how best to move on after this course. If appropriate we may also cover simple rope techniques and there may be an opportunity to try harder scrambles.

Other Information

  • No prior experience is necessary for this course but you will need a reasonable level of fitness to be comfortable spending two full days on steep terrain.
  • There will be no more than four participants per instructor.
  • The day starts at 9:00 and finishes by 17:00.
  • The course is based in Langdale.

All our scrambling courses are run by fully qualified Mountaineering and Climbing Instructors who are full members of the Association of Mountaineering Instructors (AMI).

If you would like a scrambling course designed just for you then we would recommend booking one of our private courses. These could also be run in North Wales or Scotland climbing routes such as Ledge Route on Ben Nevis or Curved Ridge on Buchaille Etive More in Glen Coe.

  • Waterproof jacket and trousers
  • Lunch, drinks and plenty of snacks.

August has been a busy month. Lots of scrambling, August has been a busy month. Lots of scrambling, climbing and navigation in the fells.
Striding Edge or Sharp Edge – which makes the bett Striding Edge or Sharp Edge – which makes the better first scramble? 🤔⛰️

It's one of the questions we're asked most often...

"Should I start with Striding Edge or Sharp Edge?"

The honest answer? Neither is automatically the best choice for everyone.

Both are fantastic Grade 1 scrambles in the Lake District, but they offer very different experiences.

🏔️ Striding Edge is broader, busier and has plenty of opportunities to choose easier or harder lines. It's a brilliant introduction for many people, but the exposure can feel intimidating if you're nervous about heights.

🪨 Sharp Edge is shorter but more technical. It demands good footwork and confidence on steeper rock. In dry conditions it's an exciting challenge, but when it's wet it can become surprisingly serious.

The best first scramble isn't necessarily the most famous one—it's the one that matches your experience, confidence and the conditions on the day.

That's why, on our scrambling days, we don't just guide you across a ridge. We help you develop the skills and confidence to move efficiently on rocky ground, make good decisions and enjoy the experience rather than simply getting through it.

Because the goal isn't to tick off one scramble...

It's to build the confidence to enjoy many more adventures in the mountains. 💚

Have you done Striding Edge, Sharp Edge, both, or neither? Which would you recommend as a first scramble? Let us know in the comments! 👇

📍 Why We Keep Our Group Sizes Small One of the qu 📍 Why We Keep Our Group Sizes Small

One of the questions we’re often asked is why we run our Beginners Navigation Courses with low instructor-to-participant ratios.

The answer is simple: learning navigation takes practice.

Reading a map, taking bearings, interpreting terrain and making good route choices are all skills that develop through doing—not just watching. By keeping groups small, every participant gets plenty of opportunities to make decisions, ask questions, make mistakes, and then try again in a supportive environment.

Rather than rushing from point to point, we can slow things down, explore different techniques, and give individual feedback tailored to each learner’s needs. This helps build confidence and ensures that everyone leaves with skills they can use independently on future adventures.

Navigation isn't about following an instructor around the hills—it's about learning how to find your own way.

Small groups. More practice. Better learning. 🧭
