At More than Mountains we run Bronze Award courses for candidates with little or no navigational knowledge and Silver Award courses for those with more experience.

Articles on Navigation

by Jill Cannon Jones

Why is it important to learn to read a map?

Which path should I take?

More than Navigation

Navigation and map reading are skills and therefore can be learned and practiced. Like most skills they are not easily acquired from books or websites but if you would like to do some reading before your course here are a few recommendations.

Books we recommend

Mountain Navigation by Peter Cliff
This book was first published in 1978 and does look a little dated but is still an excellent guide to navigation. It is only 57 pages long but it covers all aspects of navigation, is well written and easy to understand.  If you would like a book purely about navigation then we suggest this one.

Hill Walking by Steve Long
This is the official handbook of the Mountain Leader scheme and covers everything you'll need to know about walking in the hills. It is more colourful and modern looking than the Peter Cliff book and covers a much wider range of topics including camping skills and weather.  It is written with instructors in mind but is an excellent guide for anyone who wants to go out into the hills.
